Andalo is a small ski village in the province of Trento, at about 1,000 m, between the Paganella massif and the Brenta Dolomites (UNESCO). It’s known for its relaxed family atmosphere, good slopes and views of the Dolomites – and for prices lower than Italy’s most famous resorts.
The Paganella ski area
- About 50 km of pistes between 1,000 and 2,125 m. Most are blue and red – ideal for beginners and intermediates – with a few blacks.
- Modern lifts link Andalo with Molveno and Fai della Paganella.
- On a clear day the Paganella summit looks out over Lake Garda and the Brenta Dolomites.
- Ski schools with instructors, kids’ areas and a snow park.
- Snowmaking covers most of the slopes.
Off the slopes
- Lake Molveno – one of the most beautiful Alpine lakes, 5 km away.
- Spa and wellness at the hotels, and an aqua centre in Andalo.
- Cross-country skiing, snowshoe walks and sledging.
- Trento – the lovely city of the 16th-century Council, about 40 km away.
- Après-ski – bars and restaurants serving Tyrolean and Trentino food: canederli (dumplings), polenta, cheeses and apple strudel.
Getting there
- Charter flights from Bulgaria to Verona or Bergamo are sometimes offered in ski season.
- Scheduled flights to Verona, Bergamo, Venice or Milan, then about a 2-hour transfer.
- By car – about 1,300 km via Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. You’ll need vignettes for Slovenia (and Austria, if you go that way) plus winter tyres and chains.
Practical tips
- The Paganella Ski pass covers the whole area. Buy online in advance for a discount.
- In Italy, helmets are compulsory for children and young people up to a certain age, and third-party liability insurance is compulsory for all skiers. Check the current rules.
- January is the quietest, best-value month; Christmas and February are busy.
