Dolna Banya – hot springs and easy hikes at the foot of Rila
A weekend in Dolna Banya – hot mineral springs, easy hikes in northern Rila, Kostenets waterfall, Borovets and scenic flights over the valley.
- Best time to visitall year; May – October for hiking
- Suggested staya weekend (1–2 days)
- Getting there~70 km from Sofia, about 1 h on the Trakia motorway
Dolna Banya is a small spa town in a valley between the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains to the south and the low hills of Sredna Gora to the north. It’s known for its hot mineral springs (around 56 °C) and for the strawberries grown all around. Being close to both Sofia and the mountains makes it ideal for a relaxed weekend: a morning hike in Rila, an afternoon in a mineral pool, and dinner in a guesthouse garden.
What to do
- Mineral pools and spas – hotels in town and in neighbouring resorts have mineral pools, good for aching joints and general relaxation.
- Easy hikes in Rila – forest trails lead from the edge of town to the first Rila slopes and the huts above the valley. A round trip takes about 3 hours and suits families. Longer routes continue deeper into the mountains.
- Riverside picnics – the rivers coming down from Rila have handy meadows for a picnic.
- Flights over the valley – Dolna Banya airfield, one of the first private airfields in Bulgaria, is just outside town. The flying club offers scenic flights in small planes, with superb views of Rila.
- Tennis, swimming and cycling in summer; skiing and snowboarding in winter at nearby Borovets.
Nearby
- Kostenets waterfall – about 15 km away, an easy short walk from the road. Best in spring.
- Momin Prohod and Kostenets – spa resorts with mineral pools.
- Borovets – Bulgaria’s oldest ski resort, about 30 km away. A gondola heads towards Musala (2,925 m), the highest peak in the Balkans.
- Samokov – with its convent, the Saray Mosque and the museum of the Samokov school of icon painting.
Sample weekend
Day 1. Arrive in the morning. A three-hour easy hike up the first slopes of Rila and a picnic lunch by the river. A mineral pool in the afternoon, then dinner in the guesthouse garden.
Day 2. A moderate hike through the forest to a hut above the valley (about 3 hours), or a lazy morning in the garden with badminton and darts. Stop at Kostenets waterfall on the way back to Sofia.
Getting there
By car – take the Trakia motorway to the Kostenets / Dolna Banya exit. About 70 km and 1 hour. By train – the nearest station is Kostenets (Sofia–Plovdiv line), with buses and taxis onward.
When to visit
All year round. May–October is best for hiking, and June is strawberry season. In winter, the mineral pools and nearby Borovets make it a great ski weekend.
Practical tips
- Book a guesthouse with a garden – that’s half the fun.
- Mountain weather changes fast. Bring a jacket even in summer.
- If you plan to fly, check the forecast; flights only go in good visibility.
