The lights of Sofia at night, seen from Vitosha
  • Best time to visitall year; June – October for hiking, December – March for skiing
  • Suggested stayhalf a day or a full day
  • Getting there30–45 minutes from central Sofia to the Golden Bridges or Aleko

Few capitals have a mountain almost 2,300 m high right on their doorstep. Vitosha rises directly above Sofia, and you can get from the city centre to the tree line in half an hour. Locals come here for fresh air, hikes, skiing, picnics or just a cup of tea at a mountain hut. Vitosha Nature Park, declared in 1934, is the oldest nature park in the Balkans.

How Vitosha gave birth to Bulgarian tourism

On 27 August 1895, the writer Aleko Konstantinov – author of Bay Ganyo and To Chicago and Back – led nearly 300 people to the top of Cherni Vrah. That climb is considered the start of organised tourism in Bulgaria, and Vitosha’s best-known hut is named after him: Aleko hut.

What to see and do

  • Cherni Vrah (2,290 m) – the mountain’s highest point. The easiest route is from Aleko hut, about 1 h 30 min. There’s a hut at the top for a warm cup of tea, and on a clear day you can see Rila, Pirin and the Balkan Mountains.
  • The Golden Bridges – a “stone river” of huge rounded boulders with the Boyana River flowing beneath. A popular spot for walks and picnics.
  • Boyana waterfall – Vitosha’s highest (about 15 m), roughly 2 hours’ walk from the Boyana district.
  • Boyana Church – at the foot of Vitosha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its frescoes, dated 1259, are among the finest in medieval Europe. Visitors enter in small groups for a short time.
  • Dragalevtsi Monastery – a medieval monastery in the forest above the Dragalevtsi district.
  • Skiing – in winter there are slopes around Aleko, reached by car or by the chairlift from Dragalevtsi. Check which lifts are running each season.

Sofia by night, from above

One of the best experiences around Sofia is a night walk on Vitosha. Drive up to the Golden Bridges or above Dragalevtsi before dark. Grab a headlamp and walk a short way to an open meadow or rocky viewpoint. Below you the whole city sparkles – from Lyulin to Mladost, with the airport and the towers of the centre. The whole outing takes about 2 hours. Bring friends and a flask of tea – you’ll remember it.

Getting there

By car – via the roads through Dragalevtsi or Boyana. At weekends the car parks at Aleko and the Golden Bridges fill up early. By public transport – city buses run to Dragalevtsi, Boyana and Simeonovo, and at weekends there are buses up to the Golden Bridges and Aleko. Check the city transport timetable.

When to visit

Vitosha is lovely all year. June–October is best for hiking, December–March for skiing and snowy walks, and autumn is the most colourful. The summit is always 10–15 degrees cooler than the city.

Practical tips

  • The weather on Cherni Vrah changes fast. Bring a jacket, hat and water even in summer.
  • In winter there’s avalanche risk off the slopes. Don’t head out alone on unfamiliar routes.
  • Stick to marked trails and don’t leave litter – the park is a protected area.
